When ITV’s Love Your Home & Garden invited The Green Room to contribute to the programme in 2017, we had the opportunity to create a garden room with a very special purpose.

For the Eltham transformation in Series 1, Episode 2, we donated and installed a bespoke garden studio for Manisha. The studio gave her a dedicated space for her sari and dressmaking work while allowing her to remain close to her son, Aryan.

Alan Titchmarsh and his team brought together home improvements, accessible design and landscaping to transform the family’s house and garden.

We created the garden studio at the end of the newly landscaped garden. However, this was no ordinary installation. Builders, landscapers and television crews worked around us as all the different parts of the project came together for the final reveal.

A Garden Studio Designed for Manisha

The garden room had a very specific purpose. It was created as a dedicated sari and dressmaking studio for Manisha, giving her a separate place for her creative work while remaining close to her family.

Positioned at the end of the newly landscaped garden, the studio provided a peaceful workspace away from the main living areas without requiring Manisha to leave home.

Accessibility was also an important part of the wider garden transformation. The garden was designed with a wheelchair-accessible route, helping the whole family move between the house, outdoor areas and the new studio.

For us, this made the project about much more than simply installing a garden room. We were creating a practical space with a genuine purpose for the family.

Creating a Year-Round Garden Workspace

Because Manisha planned to use the studio for her sari and dressmaking work, it needed to offer much more than a traditional summerhouse.

The design created a comfortable, dedicated workspace that she could enjoy throughout the year.

The finished building featured a contemporary flat roof, modern external cladding and generous glazing. Double doors opened directly onto the garden, while large windows brought plenty of natural light into the studio.

The darker exterior complemented the surrounding planting and helped the building sit naturally within the newly landscaped garden.

We still follow the same principle with the garden rooms and garden offices we design today, creating well-insulated, comfortable rooms for working, hobbies and everyday use throughout the year.

Behind the Scenes of Love Your Home & Garden

Viewers see the finished transformation condensed into a television programme, but a great deal of work happens behind the scenes.

The Eltham project included major improvements to the house as well as a complete redesign of the garden. Our team worked closely with the builders, landscapers and television crew to coordinate the garden room installation and keep the project moving.

With several teams working alongside each other and cameras filming the progress, the Eltham project was certainly different from one of our usual garden room installations.

Building the Eltham Garden Studio

Creating the finished studio involved much more than simply constructing the external shell.

Once we completed the main structure, our team moved on to the internal fit-out to create a comfortable and practical workspace.

We smoothly plastered the walls and ceiling, then installed the lighting and electrics, ready for the final decoration and furnishings.

This is still how we approach our garden buildings today. High levels of insulation, a properly finished interior, heating and electrics help create a comfortable room that feels like a natural extension of the home.

Today, we use highly insulated SIPs construction across our garden buildings, helping them stay warm in winter, cool in summer and comfortable throughout the year.

Working With the Television Crew

One of the more unusual parts of the Eltham project was having a television crew recording the work as it progressed.

Our team was filmed during the installation, including while work was taking place on the roof of the garden room.

It gave us an interesting look at what happens behind the camera and just how many people are involved in producing a programme of this kind.

The Finished Eltham Transformation

By the time the building work, landscaping and planting were complete, the garden had been completely transformed.

Manisha’s studio sat at the end of the garden, surrounded by planting with a patio area just outside. Most importantly, it gave her a dedicated space for her sari and dressmaking work while keeping her close to the family home.

The project also demonstrated something we still see with our customers today: a garden room can provide valuable extra space without altering the main house.

The Eltham project was certainly different from a typical installation, but the principles behind the garden room remain just as relevant today.
